Term 2 Week 4 - Thursday 23 May 2024
Principal's Message
Gospel: Matthew 28: 16-20
And the eleven disciples went into Galilee, unto the mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And seeing him they adored: but some doubted. And Jesus coming, spoke to them, saying: All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.
Canteen Volunteers
Our canteen operates with the support if the community. At the moment we do not have enough volunteers, and more help is needed. The canteen will not be able to function in it s current capacity if we do not have more assistance. If you can volunteer please contact the office office.stjudes@cg.catholic.edu.au.
Walkathon
At the community council meeting on Tuesday night we decided to move the Walkathon to the end of Term 2 weather permitted. This will then lighten the Term 3 load which will have Father’s Day and the Musical. More information to come.
Student and Staff illness
There are a few bugs going around which are impacting on our students and staff. If your child is unwell, please keep them at home, until they are on the mend.
AFL
A wonderful selection of very enthusiastic senior girls participated in an AFL Gala day last Thursday. After a tough first match, the players, under the expert guidance of their coaches, played the rest of the games, including the final, undefeated. They will now qualify for the next stage which will be held in late June. Thank you to all involved.
Kinder Excursion
Our adventurous Kinder students headed off to the National Botanical Gardens for an excursion on Monday. Lot’s of great discoveries and discussion occurred. Thank you to the Kinder teachers for your organisation and facilitation.
Enrolment Period
Enrolment period continues throughout this term. We are taking enrolments in K, 1, and 4 – 6 for 2025. I have had the pleasure of meeting with many of our Kinder families and our Year 6 students have done a wonderful job as tour guides for all our visitors.
Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP)
As you would be aware, to assist either in school or on excursion you need to present a valid WWVP card to the front office. These can be ordered through Access Canberra, and the application form can be completed online.
School Musical
Auditions have begun. Thank you to all staff involved in this significant project. It requires countless out of school hours by staff and for this, the community is extremely grateful.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

ELC NEWS
On Monday the Stingrays and Turtles celebrated World Bee Day to recognise the importance of our hard-working little pollinators. We dressed up as bees, enjoyed bee themed activities and had a special visit from Tony the bee-keeper who shared lots of information the habits of bees. The Lobsters and Turtles class also celebrated World Turtle Day today. They dressed in green and enjoyed activities and investigations about Turtles. We are very lucky to have two of our very own Turtles living at the ELC. ‘Hide’ and ‘Seek’ enjoyed coming out of their tank so the children could have a closer look at them today.

Vinnie's Winter Appeal
Last Friday afternoon, Laksmi, Emmett, Olivia and Mrs Betterton attended the Mini Vinnie's conference. We learnt about the foundations of St Vincent de Paul and our inner harmony, by exploring our skills, strengths, talents and passions.
This Term we will be fundraising for St Vincent de Paul with the Vinnie's Winter Appeal. This is an annual fundraiser that helps the homeless and less fortunate in our local area. Please have a look at what your child's year group has been asked to contribute. The food collection will be on the 7 of June (Friday Week 6). A St Vincent de Paul representative will attend parish mass with Years 5 and 6 on the 6 of June to express their thanks for our contributions. Please give what you can, donations will be accepted from today onwards. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Pyjama day!
Our second fundraiser for the Winter Appeal is a pyjama day on the 31 of May (Friday, Week 5). We ask that students bring a gold coin donation. A gentle reminder that Oodies and onesies are not practical school attire. Please wear closed-in shoes.
Sacramental update
Is your child eligible for a sacrament? In the Parish of Our Lady of the Annunciation sacraments are completed in Years 3, 4 and 6. Eucharist reflection nights have begun, the next reflection night is Tuesday 28 May. Click this link to find out more.
May your light shine.

Library News
National Simultaneous Storytime was celebrated yesterday, Wednesday, 22 of May. The chosen book was Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker. Children enjoyed the story during Library lessons yesterday and many connections were made with personal experiences of observing and interacting with bowerbirds in nearby gardens.
Mrs Comley created a gorgeous bower and dropped it off to the Library yesterday (while on Leave) in celebration of reading. Thank you, Mrs Comley. A fantastic gesture!
