This week’s Gospel: Mark 1: 29-39
And immediately going out of the synagogue they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. And Simon’s wife’s mother lay in a fit of a fever: and forthwith they tell him of her. And coming to her, he lifted her up, taking her by the hand; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them. And when it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all that were ill and that were possessed with devils. And all the city was gathered together at the door.
And he healed many that were troubled with divers diseases; and he cast out many devils, and he suffered them not to speak, because they knew him. And rising very early, going out, he went into a desert place: and there he prayed. And Simon, and they that were with him, followed after him. And when they had found him, they said to him: All seek for thee. And he saith to them: Let us go into the neighbouring towns and cities, that I may preach there also; for to this purpose am I come. And he was preaching in their synagogues, and in all Galilee, and casting out devils.
First Day back
It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces, both students and parents, possibly for different reasons. Yesterday went very smoothly, with staff and students getting to know each other, develop relationships and get stuck into learning. Our staff spent the last 2 weeks preparing and this made an enormous difference. Thank you to all our families for everything you did to prepare your child for the first day of school, it obviously paid dividends.
A few reminders
- Our morning drop off routine is the same as last year, with those who want to stay, being able to park in the area past the bollards. The drive through area enables traffic to keep flowing and significantly reduces the bank up on Mulley street. Please try to make sure that your child is at school before the 8:50 bell. If they are late, even by a few minutes, they often miss the introductory instructions, which causes them stress and anxiety.
- Student supervision hours are 8:30am – 3:20pm. Outside of these times, please utilise Camp Australia.
- Sports days are generally Wednesday and Friday, on these days students are allowed to wear their coloured joggers. On other days our uniform policy has black shoes listed. These can be the traditional leather shoe or may be a softer jogger, however, they must only be black in colour. Please help us with this.
- We will be using the Cancer Council guidelines of lower than 3 UV rating for no hats. This means that for most of the time, when students are outside, they will be required to wear a hat.
- The car park at the front of the school is reserved for ELC parents, we are also looking at having an additional disabled space added to this area.
Community Council AGM
Our AGM will be held on Tuesday February 21. We will need to hold elections for two of the vacated executive positions. Each position runs for an initial 2 years, with an opportunity to be re – elected for a second term. Positions being vacated are Chair and Treasurer. We will be holding an online ballot for all families to vote. If you are interested or you would like to find out more, please contact the front office. Nomination information will be circulated next week.
Thank you for your continued support

Counselling Welcome
Hello to all families returning back or just beginning this year with St Jude’s. My name is Shandelle and I’ll be the new school counsellor at St Jude’s Primary School. My role is to support the emotional and social wellbeing of students and their families, whether or not it affects their school work.
Typically, I provide support to students with concerns of anger, anxiety, behavioural problems, depression, family breakdown/conflict, grief and loss, social relationships, stress and study skills. The problem doesn’t need to be big to speak with a counsellor, often it’s a great first step! I’m available Wednesday to Friday before, during and after school to meet with either students or parents/carers. Parent consent is required for all students. Referrals and requests can be made by completing the online referral form at https://catholiccare.force.com/housing/s/school-referral-form. Alternatively, if you would like to discuss any concerns in person, or if you have any questions, please feel welcome to email me to book an appointment at shandelle.steere@mccg.org.au. I’m looking forward to joining St Jude’s wonderful school community and supporting students to improve their mental and emotional well-being.
Staff Development Days
St Jude's staff have had a busy start to the 2024 school year engaging in 4 days of professional development prior to the commencement of students yesterday. As well as the general administration tasks of timetabling, rosters etc, staff were lead through the key initiatives for St Jude's this year. Key initiatives include enhancing school culture by linking our Mission and Vision Statement values across the whole school, 'An inclusive Catholic community, nurturing a culture of learning that fosters kindness, respect and hope', rolling out a new well being program 'The Resilience Project' across ELC-Year 6 and developing a whole school approach to the teaching of Literacy and Numeracy, utilising High Impact Teaching Strategies.
Each year staff participate in a spirituality day. Last Thursday, Acting REC, Mrs Jess Betterton led staff through a day of prayer and reflection based on the year of the Holy Spirit. The highlight of the day was staff participating in a painting tutorial. Many varied masterpieces were created, despite everyone trying to paint the same picture.
It was a lovely day to ease back in to school after the break.
This week staff participated in the Catholic Education System Day along with all CE schools. After a welcome address from Most Reverend Archbishop Christopher Prowse and CE Director Ross Fox, staff were led through a series of presentations by renowned educationalists. Dr Tim McDonald presented Classroom and Behaviour Management, which will be a focus for CE schools in the next couple of years, discussing behaviour norms in schools and the need for students to know boundaries and expectations. Once this is established learning can more easily occur. Dr Ben Jensen spoke about Knowledge (content) Rich Curriculum and it's alignment with the new Version 9 Australian Curriculum. Staff came away with many insights from these days and new strategies to try in their classrooms.
