Dear Parents and Carers
Parent Teacher interviews and Semester Reports
Thank you for making the time to meet with your child’s teacher this week. I spoke to several parents who are thrilled with the progress their children are making. The discussions during these interviews will help when it comes time to looking at the semester report with your child. This report will go home with students next Friday afternoon. We will not be posting or emailing reports. A while ago, we did use the mail service for some reports but the time taken to deliver these reports varied hugely from suburb to suburb and in some cases, city to city, so we have stopped this approach. Students who require two copies of their report will have the responsibility of ensuring mum and dad receive one each. It is important that children be at school to receive their report. In addition to the school report, there will be an explanation of the change of format to this semesters report.
The canteen continues to grow in popularity. Mike is thrilled with the uptake of orders and is enjoying getting to know the children. Please contact Mike if you can volunteer in the canteen.
Thank you for the effort made to free up car spaces in the ELC carpark. Our ELC parents appreciate the gesture.
Updated Public Transport Timetables from 18 July
From Saturday 18 July 2020, Transport Canberra will be updating timetables for bus services. These changes will help make public transport in Canberra easier to use by providing more services and increased frequency, to ensure that people have greater opportunity to spread out their travel across the day as we recover from COVID-19. Transport Canberra has worked closely with the school community and are providing increased frequency and additional services for school students across Canberra. As a new timetable is being introduced, there will be minor changes for all students travelling to and from school on public transport across Canberra from the first day of Term 3, 2020 (Monday 20 July 2020). In most cases, this will mean that students will catch the same service from the same stop, but the times that services arrive and leave may change.
All schools, parents and students can find out more about the specific changes by:
- checking the information packs for each school, which are online at transport.act.gov.au
- checking timetables for each route (including school specials), which are online at transport.act.gov.au
- calling 13 17 10.
The St Jude's updated timetable (from 18 July) is included in this newsletter.
Did you know…
Children only spend 15% of their week at school.
They spend more time asleep – 33%.
But most of their time; 52% is spent at home! Awake, mucking around, playing and learning about life.
It’s what they do with that time, that is important.

Sacrament of Reconciliation
Today, a large number of students from Year 3 made their sacrament of First Reconciliation with Fr Michael. There was a mix of different emotions from the candidates ranging from nervousness to elation. Thank you to Ms Sallecchia, Mrs Lynch, Mrs Stincic and Mrs Mahony for preparing their students for the sacrament. Thank you also to the students in Year 3 who did not make the sacrament but have been with their friends supporting them along the way.
Sacrament of First Holy Communion
We are currently negotiating a date to hold the Sacrament of First Holy Communion early next term. It will take place over a number of Masses throughout the week (not at a weekend Mass). Due to current restrictions, all students from St Jude’s will make the sacrament here at our church and there will be a limit on who can attend each mass - it will be the candidate and their parent/s only. When more details are finalised, I will ensure that all parents are kept informed.
St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal
Thank you for your very generous donations towards the Winter Appeal. I am overwhelmed and very grateful for your generosity towards those people in our community who are vulnerable and in need. Mary Watts from the local Weston Creek/Molonglo conference will be coming to collect the goods very soon!

Congratulations to the Turtle children and their teachers who have created their very own version of a story they visited during Reconciliation Week, Warnayarra the Rainbow Snake. The children have painted their own illustrations and have voiced the story to create an amazing iMovie, which they should be extremely proud of. You will not be disappointed if you follow this link www.stjudesps.act.edu.au/elc-showcase
Thank you to Mr Kaltner for helping to make the iMove possible.
Parent Sharing Meetings
Thank you to those parents who have attended Parent Sharing Meetings. If you have not yet booked a time, please contact your child’s teacher. Please remember to return your child’s portfolio to the ELC so we can continue to build on them throughout the year.
ELC family Reflection Sheets
Thank you to those families who have returned an ELC reflection sheet which was placed in your child’s portfolio. We value your feedback!
ELC Holiday Program
The ELC will be running a Holiday Program for ELC children in the July school holidays. Email your holiday program bookings to ELC Holder firstname.lastname@example.org before Wednesday 1 July (next Wednesday).
Thank you for continuing with our changed pick up and drop off routines and maintaining social distancing. These changes will remain in place into term 3.
Unwell children are required to stay at home. Please email the ELC to let us know if your child is unwell.
Government Relief Package extended
The Australian Government has extended the Early Childhood Education and Care Relief Package until 12 July (to correspond with the CCS financial year). Therefore, no 'gap fees' will be charged for the remainder of this term or the first week of Holiday Care. Normal fees will apply after 12 July. If you have any queries in relation to your account, please phone or email the ELC.
Child Care Subsidy
The CCS system will resume on 13 July. Prior to this, we encourage ELC families to check that your details are up to date on your Centrelink online account through MyGov. Please also check and update your income estimate for 2020-21.

House Spirit Cup
A huge congratulations to Hindmarsh who won the House Spirit cup this term. It was a close race right to the end, however, with the mighty effort from Ellie C (5L) and a contribution from all year levels from Hindmarsh got them over the line. Well done!
Next term all students at St Jude’s will be participating in a weekly lesson at Woden Valley Gymnastics. We are looking forward to hearing some wonderful stories from our students about their adventures.
On Wednesday from week 6 to week 10 of term 3, we will be participating in soccer clinics with Ivan Santos Diaz from Capital Football. Last year our students loved all the challenges Ivan was able to offer us.
Students in Year 2 and Year 5 (during weeks 1 to week 5 of term 3) and our Year 3 and Kindy classes will be participating in Yoga lessons with our two Yoga Instructors, Kristy and Radhika.
Students in Kindy and Year 2 will explore Chair Yoga in their classrooms.
Students in Year 3 and Year 5 will be in the hall with floor yoga.
We can’t wait to see the benefits of yoga rubbing off on these students.
Students in their house groups have been participating in fitness during the week. We have been focusing on skipping, beep tests, strength exercises, cardio exercises and expanding our fitness levels.
There are plenty of holiday camps on offer. Please check out our website for more information.
Leanne Thomas - Sports Coordinator
On Thursday 29 October (term 4) Ez Japanese will be visiting us for some workshops in Taiko drumming. This will be a fabulous experience for all students at St Jude’s and will tie in nicely with our music program.
Leanne Thomas - Specialist Music Teacher
Thank you for the response to the Reading Challenge! Lots of children are now bringing their completed sheets back to the library and collecting rewards. Wonderful!

Mike here, Canteen Manager. What a week it’s been. We are getting close to school holidays (already!).
Don’t forget this Friday 26 June, the special is Hotdogs. I have a feeling it’s going to be a big one. I've been stopped in the streets by kids and parents saying they are excited for Friday.
Next week’s specials are:
Wednesday - BBQ chicken drumsticks
Thursday - Mac and Cheese and
fun food Friday will be an all time favourite - Chicken Nuggets.
I’m already nervous about next Friday. Speaking of which, if you would like to volunteer I would love to hear from you. Thank you to all the volunteers that have helped out, you’re all superstars.
One last thing, I would like to thank all the kids for having wonderful manners this week. Your parents would be proud. Keep up the good work because good manners will get you everywhere in life.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)
The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) takes place every year. A student is counted in the NCCD if they receive reasonable adjustments at school due to disability. Each year, St Jude’s collects the following information on these students:
- year of schooling
- the level of adjustment received
- the broad type of disability.
St Jude’s will provide this compulsory information to education authorities in August. If you have any questions please contact Kerri in the Butterfly Room or at the email below.
